Vest-Telemark Museum Eidsborg is the perfect starting point for exploring the region’s rich cultural heritage. The site includes a modern museum building with engaging exhibitions, the Eidsborg Stave Church, and an open-air museum with more than 30 historic buildings – among them Stålekleivloftet from 1184, one of the world’s oldest preserved secular wooden buildings.
Vest-Telemark Museum Eidsborg is located along county road 450 between Høydalsmo and Dalen. Your ticket includes entry to the Eidsborg Stave Church from the 12th century, one of Norway’s five oldest stave churches. Guided tours of the church are offered three times daily during the season at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00. Please note that the church is closed between guided tours.
The main museum building houses a café, a well-stocked museum shop, and a range of permanent and temporary exhibitions highlighting the cultural history of Vest-Telemark. Exhibitions feature traditional folk art such as bunads, rosemaling and the region’s strong knife-making traditions.
The outdoor museum area includes historic farm buildings, cultivated fields worked using traditional methods, and an activity park with a 105-metre miniature model of the Telemark Canal. During summer, visitors can experience crafts demonstrations and activities such as rune carving, log construction and archery. Walking paths in the surrounding area make it easy to combine your museum visit with outdoor exploration.
